Head Coach & Faculty Advisor
Bill Johns
Bill sailed in college and has since raced in a number of one-design classes including Snipes, Lightnings, and J-24’s. He is currently an active Etchells sailor.
Bill has been head coach of the University of Miami sailing team since 2008. He was awarded SAISA coach of the year honors in 2022-23. He is also a professor of oceanography at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science.

Assistant Coach
Marshall McCann
Marshall McCann grew up sailing in Houston, TX, starting in Optis before transitioning to the ILCA 7 in 2014. He became a member of the US Sailing Olympic Development Team in the ILCA 7 class in 2016. Marshall attended the University of Miami from 2019 to 2023, where he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
During his time at the university, he sailed in 39 regattas as a double-handed skipper and achieved three podiums in single-handed nationals. Additionally, he competed in three double-handed nationals as a skipper. Marshall is currently working as a Project Manager for a commercial general contractor in Miami and began coaching the UMST team in the 2024-2025 season.
